Abstract
Korea has prepared and responded to COVID-19 crisis rather effectively in the early stage. However, after 10 months of lengthy social distancing, the public are experiencing psychological fatigue and there is an increasing doubt on the effectiveness of government¡¯s restrictive measures. Government should be very cautious on social distancing because it has huge cost on economy, education, and society and much higher burden on the poor and vulnerable. More sustainable policy for COVID-19 should be based on both evidence and societal value judgment. We need more research evidence on the effectiveness of social distancing measures as well as their cost and benefits on the society. Considering evidence and the capacity of health care system, we need a consensus on ¡°acceptable risk¡± that our society is willing and capable to take, which is a more sustainable approach to improve resilience of our socioeconomic system facing a pandemic crisis.
